Comments:
not really, 'san' is just more formal. it's just that the guys tend to get more respect.

i thought san was for guys....chan is for girls...right?

San means "Mr." more or less
Chan is a title meaning cute, for girls
Kun goes for boys.

Actually, not quite...
-san is for girls and boys equally. It's the same as saying Mr. or Miss/Mrs.
-chan is for people you're close to but generally to young girls (or boys, albeit less frequently).
-kun is on par with -chan, but more frequently used to address males (of all ages); but not restricted to that.
Above them all is -sama, which is a respectful way of addressing someone (gender nonspecific). If anyone watched RuroKen, he often says -dono. Just about the same thing (but not quite ;)
There's also -sensei (for teachers and doctors), -heika (for royalty) and freakish things like -chama (for... No idea.)
