Ironically, an American school is where you would (theoretically) learn to spell it "practice". "Practise" is correct... in the United Kingdom. I don't know about other places. So while American schools have their failings, to be sure...

also, just because a spelling is American doesn't mean its incorrect. It's just from a different culture. Its like saying someone with a northern accent 'speaks incorrectly'. it's dialect etc. Even grammar that children write isn't called "incorrect", it's "non-standard". Language is communication, communicate how you want!!! p.s. I'm English so don't start an Anti-American rampage at me just listen.

@ Nyperold Actually, I'm British and we use both: -'practiCe' is a noun (eg-dental practice) -'practiSe' is a verb (eg-we practised riding our bikes)
