The average age of first errands (i.e. going shopping by themselves) In japan is about 4 years old. In Most Japanese towns, rural communities live in hubs of shops, schools etc. so everything is in walking distance. It's like asking a kid to go around the corner. In fact, I think stranger Danger is overblown in the US. You're more likely to be hit by lightning than to be abducted by a stranger.
