I think it's just me.. But I think that comparing Yotsuba's pony-tails now .. and with the first chapter.

You see a huge difference.

Yotsuba's ponytails merely evolved because they are probably easier for Azuma to draw this way. Koiwai's hair used to be more disheveled-looking too.

Yeah, that's right about Yotsuba's hair... but, that tends to happen to artists of any kind, mangaka included. My guess is that they're often not really used to drawing the character(s) when they first start their series... but they very gradually improve. It's hard to detect if you're reading the manga for the first time, but it can be so funny when you've finished the series to look back at the first volume and see how weird everyone looks!

Tenjho Tenge by Oh! Great is a good example of this... his characters have various inconsistencies during the first two volumes, with some features changing every panel. He became accustomed to his characters by... around the third volume, when they all started to have more defined appearances.

If you look at the early Azumanga Daioh manga, Chiyo-chan's hair also looks different than it does at the end. The pigtails are more thin, rather than the cone shapes they become.
